Roman Mars is obsessed with flags — and after you watch this talk, you might be, too. These ubiquitous symbols of civic pride are often designed, well, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be. In this surprising and hilarious talk about vexillology — the study of flags — Mars reveals the five basic principles of flag design and shows why he believes they can be applied to just about anything. Flags may be the most underrated and yet the most powerful pieces of design. They can invoke feelings of pride, anger, or fear; we will die for them, or even kill for them. By examining how we feel about these everyday symbols, we can realize the immense power held inside simple pieces of colored cloth. Only then can we attempt to harness the power of flags to inspire us, not to further divide ourselves, but to unite us as a planet and as a species. Michael is passionate about telling stories in innovative, immersive and disruptive ways. He holds a degree in Visualization from Texas A&M and has since worked in various roles around the university promoting the adoption of new technology and well-designed brand experiences. He was part of the team who retooled admissions marketing into what is now “Aggiebound”, was Sr. Graphic Designer helping manage the visual A&M brand, and now as Emerging & Interactive Media, does whatever crazy ideas he can get away with. Recently, that has meant traveling the world filming 360-degree videos of extraordinary Aggies impacting the globe. On the quest to step foot in 100 countries, Michael collects flags as he travels and is a published vexillologist (flag researcher). He writes a blog on flag design titled Branding the Nations and speaks on the topic of flag design and personal identity. Do states with poorly designed flags have less state pride? Vexillologist Michael Green takes a survey of how flag design and sports branding can affect regional pride and even personal identity. Michael then ends the talk showing some of his "Better State Flags", guerilla redesigns of the worst flag design offenders. Michael Green is the Asst. Athletic Director for Branding, Digital & Social at Texas A&M Athletics and an Adjunct Professor of Design Thinking at Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School. He is passionate about the intersection of branding and personal identity and uses this to deepen fan’s affinity to Texas A&M. Michael is also a published vexillologist (flag researcher) and after the success of his TEDxTAMU talk in 2020, started Flags For Good, a company where he gets to design flags and donate a portion to causes that move the world forward. After receiving a degree in Visualization from A&M in 2011, Michael spent a year traveling around the world where he met his wife Cassie and they have been exploring this awesome planet together since. Welcome! In this tutorial, we will learn about making a flag! We'll address what you need, how to use colours and symbols on flags! I hope y'all learn something from this, and let me know what you think! Historically, flags were designed to clearly demonstrate a people's claim to a piece of land. Of course, this wasn't their only purpose, as they were used in warfare, as decorations, and other sorts of practices to represent the ideals of a people. #americanflag #oldglory #starsandstripes Have you ever wondered how current us flag evolved throughout history? The Flag of the United States of America represented freedom and liberty to which Americans pledge their allegiance. Today, the US flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars. The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies, and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. But in the old days (before 1960), the USA didn't have 50 states. Therefore the US flag didn't have 50 stars. Then how was it back in good old days? Here a video showing; The Evolution of US Flags With Possible Future Designs | History of American Flag. Update: I was looking through a catalog of face masks last night and there were a few that were of flags. Besides the US one, there were Colorado, New Mexico, Maryland, and Chicago. Watch this video and you'll see why those ones, and not some others like New Hampshire. Let’s face it, most – but not all – of US state flags are pretty awful. You run across an occasional exception, like New Mexico or Maryland, but they’re mostly a dreary lot that are hard to tell apart. In this video, I’m going to go through all of them, indicate which ones don’t have to be changed, and then suggest redesigns for the ones that do. These won’t all be my own designs – if a flag can be saved by a small change, I’ve done that; if there’s an historical flag that could be adopted or readopted, I’ve suggested it, and if someone else has suggested a new design that I like, I’ve gone with that. For the remainder (and for a few with good redesigns by others) I’ve designed my own. If you can’t get your state to redesign its flag, do it yourself. Sometimes changes come from the grassroots. Just start flying your new design and encourage others to do so. If enough people do that, it’ll become the new state flag by default. And don’t let your state representatives tell you it would be too expensive to change. Changing flags on state stationery can be done in minutes. Cloth ones can be replaced as they wear out; the world won’t come to an end just because there are two different state flags being flown for a while. So get at it, people. If you have your own redesigns and have them on-line somewhere, post their URL so we can all have a look. There are a few mistakes I’ve caught in the video, and probably some I haven’t. When I talk about Michigan’s Zervic flag, I twice get the pronunciation right (if that’s indeed the right one), but the third time it sounds more like “verdict.” Sorry, Mr. Zervic. I say that Colorado’s flag is the only one with the state’s initial on it, but Ohio’s can be said to have an “O” on it; I don’t know if that’s official, but there it is. The history of Kansas’s “State Banner” is a little more complex than I say. I call people from Michigan "Michiganites," but I've been informed by several people that the proper term is "Michiganders." They seemed quite upset about my mistake, and I don't blame them; "Michigander" is a much cooler name. Mea culpa, Michiganders. While not really a mistake, I'd like to surrender on my suggested change for Indiana. I still really like the George Rogers Clark flag, but I've had a large number of commenters from Indiana, more than on any other flag, say they hate it, and that the name should be removed from it, and the resulting flag cleaned up to line things up better after doing so. So, Hoosiers, as far as I'm concerned, that's the way it should be. Besides, you've got a lot better chance getting that change through than a completely new flag. I actually was in Indiana recently (Aug, 2021), and found the flag being flown a lot of places. I don't know if I saw any on non-government buildings, but if so that's a sign that Hoosiers like it, and that only the small change of removing the name should be made. If you want an argument for it, pass on that although I saw a lot of flags, not only couldn't I read the state name, I didn't even see it. Sorry if some of the slides are blurry, or the designs awkwardly lined. I had to work with what I had. The images of the current flags are all from Wikipedia Commons.
