Viktor Yanukovych is our president. Last time they took away his victory, but they won''t do it now, he will be our president, Viktor Yanukovych will be our president, we stood for him in 2004". 16. Mid of people with flag written in Ukrainian "For Yanukovych! Choice 2004". 17. Close up of Yanukovych supporters talking to journalists 18. Mid of Yanukovych supporters STORYLINE Viktor Yanukovych was inaugurated as Ukrainian president on Thursday, six years after massive protests over vote fraud got his first election victory tossed out. Ukraine''s president took part in an official parade in front of the President''s administration building. Yanukovych had earlier taken the oath of office in the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament that has been the scene of intense manoeuvring over the future of his rival Yulia Tymoshenko, who aims to stay on as prime minister. Yanukovych narrowly defeated Tymoshenko in a presidential election runoff on February 7. Tymoshenko alleges vote fraud, but she has dropped her court case on the issue, claiming the court was controlled by Yanukovych''s supporters. International observers had called the 2010 vote free and fair. Tymoshenko led the 2004 Orange Revolution protests that paved the way for a rerun of the fraud-tainted 2004 presidential election in which Yanukovych had been declared winner. He lost a revote to Viktor Yushchenko. Yanukovych, whose margin of victory was only 3.5 percentage points, enters office with a shaky mandate and faces severe national challenges. He inherits an economy crippled by the global financial crisis and a nation whose political loyalties are polarised. He has broad support in the Russian-speaking east of the country, but in the Ukrainian-speaking west, he lost in virtually every region to Tymoshenko. Once considered a Kremlin flunky, the new president promised to carve a unique geopolitical path for Ukraine. His predecessor''s aim to bring the country into NATO alienated many Ukrainians and angered neighbouring Russia. Critics said Yushchenko''s push for closer integration with the European Union was made at the expense of paying attention to his country''s serious economic problems and endemic corruption. Yanukovych, a native Russian-speaker, is expected to bring Ukraine''s closer into Moscow''s influence, but to what extent is unclear. Russian officials openly supported him in the 2004 election, leading to criticism of outside interference, so Russia kept a low profile in this year''s election. The parliament has not even been able to pass a budget for this year. Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

When former President Victor Yanukovych fled Ukraine in February 2014, he left behind a trove of documents that incriminated him and his close allies in a number of corruption schemes. Maxym Opanasenko, who works with a group of Ukrainian investigative journalists from Slidstvo.Info and Hromadske, examined what the Ukrainian Attorney General's office has done with the evidence gathered over a year ago against Yanukovych. The documents show that millions of dollars were siphoned off and continue to be siphoned off from public funds to companies owned by Yanukovych and his close associates. Despite overwhelming evidence of corruption, little has been done to prosecute the individuals involved, or to recover the stolen money. This is by large due to the inaction of the Ukrainian state prosecutors. // Maxym Opanasenko Get up to speed on Ukraine. Follow Hromadske! Ukraine, Explained. 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 YouTube: 🤍

Mid of Medvedev and Yanukovych standing up to leave news conference STORYLINE: Russian and Ukrainian presidents praised each other on Friday for moving on from the bad relationship between the two countries that followed Ukraine''s pro-Western Orange Revolution of 2004, on the first visit to Russia by newly appointed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Yanukovych was making his first trip to Moscow since being sworn in last week, and met his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin. Yanukovych''s deputy chief of staff, Anna German, told The Associated Press ahead of the visit that Ukraine "expected concrete agreements" from the visit, and hoped that Russia would cut gas prices for his country. But Medvedev limited himself to pledging a revival in "brotherly" ties while lamenting the "dark streak" in relations of the past five years. Ukraine had been governed since 2005 by the Orange leaders, who had sought to break Ukraine out of Russia''s sphere of influence and join the European Union and NATO. Moscow fumed over these efforts, and Medvedev refused last year to send an ambassador to Ukraine until President Viktor Yushchenko, a harsh critic of the Kremlin, was out of office. "I expect that with the appointment of a new president in Ukraine, relations between our countries will assume a new dynamic," Medvedev said. Russia''s Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said on the sidelines of the meeting that specific issues would not be resolved until Ukraine appointed a new prime minister. Analysts have tipped Yushchenko as a possible but unlikely candidate for that powerful post. The government of Yulia Tymoshenko, the heroine of the Orange movement, was ousted on Tuesday in a no-confidence vote initiated by Yanukovych''s party. Tymoshenko signed a gas supply deal with Russia last January that obliged Ukraine to start paying European gas prices, which are much higher than it previously paid. Yanukovych now wants to renegotiate the gas deal that ended that dispute and bring Russian gas prices back below European levels.
