The war between Russia and Ukraine is putting a massive strain on the global food supply. Food prices in the U.S. soared to record heights along with other commodities like wheat, corn and fertilizers. So how exactly does the conflict in Ukraine pose a threat to the global food supply and can anything be done to stop it? Watch the video find out. The war in Ukraine is putting a massive strain on the global food supply. Ukrainian grain exports last month were a quarter what they were in February. Also as a direct result of the Russian invasion, the cost of fertilizers, with prices soaring for raw materials like ammonia, nitrogen, and nitrates, are up 30% since the start of 2022. “This is going to be another major test of the food supply system,” said Diane Charlton, assistant professor of agricultural economics at Montana State University. “We will have to watch very carefully what’s happening in other parts of the world and consider ways to reduce risks of food shortages and conflict.” Meanwhile, food prices in the U.S. are rising at historic rates, while prices for commodities like wheat and corn are at their highest levels in a decade. What’s more, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts that food-at-home prices will see an increase of up to 4% by the end of 2022. “It’s particularly severe because we are just coming out of a recovery from a two-and-a-half-year pandemic that had severe implications on the prices of goods and services as well as the price of commodities,” according to Johanna Mendelson-Forman, adjunct professor at the American University in the School of International Service. Despite the prospect of continued rising prices, however, experts don’t expect food shortages to occur in the United States. “It’s important to realize that the U.S. doesn’t import very much from Ukraine,” explained Joseph Glauber, a senior research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute. “We may see some shelves that are empty for various kinds of food products like we have for a while now as we recover from the pandemic,” said Scott Irwin, chair of agricultural marketing at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “But I can say with some real confidence that in the United States, the average consumer is not going to see a shortage of bread because of what’s going on in Ukraine.” » Subscribe to CNBC: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC TV: 🤍 About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Since early 2022, the United Nations World Food Programme and others have been warning that the number of people experiencing extreme hunger was accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Rising costs of food and energy, the lingering economic impacts of the pandemic, and the ripple effects of conflict are pushing the most vulnerable, in rich countries and poor, to the limit. Will there be a global food shortage in 2023? WFP explains what’s driving the global food crisis - and what it will take to stop it.

More people are hungry than ever before, and the UN warns the numbers are increasing The UN's latest report on global hunger shows we are moving backwards. At least 828 million people went hungry one way or another, on a daily basis, last year. War, natural disasters and rising temperatures are threatening food security. The battle against hunger is quite literally, an existential one. But there was a time when winning that battle seemed within reach - as production surpluses could have meant enough food for all. But climate change, conflict, and a broken food system have threatened that goal. Ukraine, a big provider of wheat to the world, is unable to export grain amid a blockade of its Black Sea ports, such as Odesa. While millions of tonnes of grain sit stuck in silos, countries dependent on these supplies have been left in a desperate situation. Starvation and malnutrition threaten the lives of tens of millions in places like Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Supply shortages have worsened the humanitarian crises. Video Remarks by António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, at the “Time to Act Together: Coordinating Policy Responses to the Global Food Crisis" - General Assembly high-level special event, 76th session (18 July 2022) I commend the Committee on World Food Security, the President of the General Assembly, and our Global Crisis Response Group for joining forces at this critical moment. Our world faces a host of challenges — climate change, COVID-19, conflicts and rising inflation. Against this backdrop, food, energy and fertilizer prices are skyrocketing, aggravated by the war in Ukraine. Taken together, this is a recipe for economic hardship, social turmoil, and record levels of hunger. As the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals, the last two years have already seen a doubling of the number of people who are severely food insecure. We face a real risk of multiple famines this year. And next year could be even worse. But we can avoid this catastrophe if we act now. And as our meeting theme reminds us, if we act together to craft bold and coordinated policy responses. This means immediately reintegrating Ukraine’s food production, and Russia’s food and fertilizer, into world markets, and keeping global trade open. It means tackling the finance crisis in the developing world, and urgently unlocking all possible resources to enhance social protection and support smallholder and family farmers to increase productivity and self-reliance. And it means transforming food systems at every level — to put affordable, healthy and sustainable diets within reach of every person, everywhere. The United Nations is committed to working with all of you to solve this crisis, and to continue pressing for a global food system that works for all people. Let’s get there together.

From a country that suffered one of the worst famine in history, Ukraine has become one of the major grain exporters in the world. Last year, it produced about 100 million tonnes of grain, and exported 75 percent of it. With tensions between Ukraine and Russia, there are fears that the cost of these exports may rise, or that they may not make it out of Ukraine at all. Russia's invasion of Ukraine puts world at risk of severe food crisis

30.03.2022

우크라이나 사태에 세계 식량 위기 닥친다... "빈곤-소외 계층에 가장 가혹할 것" It's Spring planting season in Ukraine but farmers can't carry out their tasks as most are on the frontlines or looking after families and neighbors due to Russia's attacks.. This has raised concerns of global food shortage as the two countries are key grains suppliers. Kim Sung-min provides a deeper analysis. The world's breadbasket is at war. With Russia's invasion,... Ukrainian farms are about to miss the critical planting season for spring crops like corn, barley and sunflower seeds. As of last week the country has only sown 150-thousand hectares out of last year's 15-million... with 99 percent of the fields still laying empty. And it's assumed that just 7 million hectares, half the normal amount, will be sown this spring... leading to a much smaller harvest. Not only Ukraine but the world will have to pay the cost as both Russia and Ukraine contribute significantly to the world's essential food exports. The two countries together account for around a quarter of global grain exports. They supply 30 percent of global wheat exports,... almost 12 percent of corn and more than 80 percent of the world's sunflower oil. "But if we don't have a proper plant in season, there're going to be maybe a reduction of five to ten percent of world's supply in the fall... that's going to create food crisis." Prices of key crops like wheat, barley and corn soared as traders assessed that the food shortage will become real in a very short period of time. Benchmark wheat prices in Chicago hit a record-high of 13 U.S. dollars 60 cents a bushel this month from an average of 5 dollars 50 cents a bushel over the past five years. And it seems like the most vulnerable will suffer the most. Africa and Asia are among the most reliant on Ukraine's grain, with Egypt and Indonesia being the top two importers. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that up to 13 million more people worldwide may be pushed into food insecurity because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. To alleviate the problem,... the U.S. and Canada are mulling ways to expand their production and hopes are high in India too,... as the world's biggest wheat provider is expected to see a record harvest this year. Food security has risen as an important issue in South Korea as well, as it is less than 50 percent self-sufficient when it comes to grains. President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol's transition team are also discussing measures to secure a stable food supply. Experts say the best option would be to diversify import channels. "Well the problem is Korea is not a very good terrain to mass produce grains because Korea has too much mountainous ranges(....)I think a better move would be try to find some countries to form a secure supply chain." Also, because grains are essential as feed stock, South Korea is expected to see a surge in the price of meat in the near future. 전세계 심각한 식량위기로 치닫는다 The World Food Programme has warned of an impending failure in food supply chains, partly caused by Russia's blockade of Ukrainian ports. Ukraine has been described as the world's bread basket, but grain ships are unable to deliver their shipments from the conflict-stricken nation. Executive Director for the United Nations World Food Programme, David Beasley, said on Tuesday that a food crisis is already at hand. According to the director, even before the invasion,... food costs, commodity prices, and shipping costs were doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling. Beasley also said the number of people "marching to starvation" has risen from 80-million to 276-million over the last four or five years. #food_crisis #World_Food_Programme #David_Beasley #식량위기 #세계식량계획 📣 Arirang News(Facebook) : 🤍 📣 Arirang News(Twitter) : 🤍 📣 News Center(YouTube) : 🤍 2022-05-25, 08:00 (KST)

UN Warns of 'Hell on Earth' Food Shortages

The war in Ukraine, the on-going pandemic, rise in inflation and climate change have led to over 300 million people living on the brink of starvation said the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program David Beasley. As fertilizer becomes more difficult to manufacture and export, countries in Africa and Asia are unable to harvest typical quantities of food. "The world produces enough food to feed everybody on the planet, over 7.7 billion people," Beasley said. "50%of that food is because of fertilizer, so if you don't have fertilizer, you can't have harvest at the yields that you need." Climate change is a compounding factor, contributing to droughts and famine in numerous countries. "We're looking at $11 billion shortfall of food production inside Africa alone. Now, I can go to Central America, South America, same issues on droughts. India devastated by heat and drought, and I can go on and on." Beasley spoke to the Associated Press in the U.N. Rose Garden outside of the headquarters in New York during the 77th General Assembly. The U.S. on Thursday accused Russia of using food as a weapon in its war on Ukraine, and in turn, creating a global food security crisis. Ukraine grows enough food to feed 400 million people, and Ukraine and Russia together account for a third of the world’s wheat exports. But Russia’s invasion and blockade of Ukrainian ports are preventing exports of grain and steel. Nick Schifrin reports. Russia's war on Ukraine is pushing the world's most vulnerable countries into a food security crisis. Many of these states are in Africa, which rely heavily on Russia and Ukraine for wheat, fertilizer and vegetable oil imports. Earlier this week, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the African Union the situation is catastrophic. The fighting has disrupted global commodity markets and trade to the African continent, raising food prices and creating more shortages. World leaders are gathering in Germany to address the looming global hunger crisis, DW takes a look at Sudan, which is just one of the African countries facing an urgent need to alleviate growing hunger. And South Africa is also feeling the effects of the war in Ukraine. The covid 19 pandemic already triggered a growing economic crisis. And now, surging food prices and unemployment is forcing many into homelessness. But one center is trying to keep people off the streets.
